What does it really mean by High Defination ?
I know HD means good pic and video quality and i also read wikipedia article on HD. But What I really want to know is…Say I have a digital camera 10.1 Mega pixel ..is it HD?
And also If i want to buy a HD camcorder… are they some special or just any camcorder i can buy with current technology from the market.
In the video world, video resolution is not measured by pixels or megapixels – but is measured by horizontal lines of resolution.
Standard definition video is 480 horizontal lines.
High definition video is 720 or 1080 horizontal lines.
There are consumer, standard definition only, camcorders. Examples include:
MiniDV tape: Sony DCR-HC series, Panasonic PV-GS series, Canon ZR series
Flash memory: Canon FS series
Hard disc drive: Sony DCR-SR series
There are consumer, high definition only, camcorders. Examples include:
Flash memory: Canon HF series; Sony HDR-XR series
Most consumer high definition camcorders recordin a very highly compressed AVCHD/MTS format. Typically you can select whether high quality AVCHD or low quality AVCHD is captured.
There are consumer camcorders that can capture standard definition and high definition format video. Examples include:
MiniDV tape: Sony HDR series, Canon HV series
There are still cameras that can capture standard definition video like the Canon PowerShot line. There are still cameras that can capture high definition like the Camin Mark 5 series or the Nikon D series D-SLRs.
There are pocket camcorders that can capture standard definitoin – like the Flip and Kodak “multimedia lines – many of these companies have high definition siblings to the standard def cams.
The differences are the amount of compression applied to the video before it is written to the storage media (more compression = reduced quality… DV and HDV are the least compressed).
Lenses and imaging chips determine low-light behavior. As the lenses and imaging chips get bigger, the camcorder get more expensive and the lowlight behavior improves.
Manual controls that are easy to get to on the outside of the camcorder moves the price of the camcorder up.
And yes, high definition camcorders will be marked HDV or AVCHD… and still cameras that can save high definition video will likely be marked with HD (and typically save to MOV format files).
And better camcorders will have an audio-in connection and manual audio control.
