sony camcorders see through clothes

Is it true that “In 1998, Sony accidently sold 700,000 camcorders that could see through peoples clothes?”?
the actual quote is “In 1998, Sony accidently sold 700,000 camcorders that had the technology to see through people”s clothes.” and i found it on http://www.funfunnyfacts.com/fun-facts/funny-weird-facts2.html
I dont think we have this kind of technology yet, does anyone know for a fact that this rumor is true or false?
Actually, this is true. To an extent. Rather than cameras, these are special lenses that use infrared light (IR) to see through some types of clothing. It primarily works on dark colored, thin clothing. Like swimsuits. The main factor is how well the fabric absorbs IR light waves. It’s not for regular digicams, but rather for camcorders with a IR night vision mode
