Lens Filter
I want to buy a UV filter or sky light for my new lens?
I just need it for protecting my lens. My filter diameter is 77mm. What information can you give me that I might need to take into consideration before I buy? Brand name recommendation? Types? Thicknesses? Anything!
Is it possible to buy filters that do not affect the light at all or affect it to an absolute minimum and are used purely for protection? If so what are they called?
Don’t buy cheap! At the bottom-end, you can get a Hoya or Tiffen instead of a generic no-name brand. Progressing upward, you can get a Singh-Ray or B+W brand.
Thinner is better–less chance of vignetting….unless you need to stack filters. Then, thicker ones offer you the option of stacking additional filter(s) on.
However, the issue of “protection” is debatable. A lens hood and lens cap do a better job of protection. Anything capable of damaging a front element would certainly damage a filter and drive filter glass into the front element. However, the biggest issue for me is that filters will reduce contrast and potentially introduce flare, reflections, and ghosting.
Bottom-line: if you use a filter, in my opinion it should be for a specific photographic purpose, to achieve a particular effect, rather than as protection.
