When Buying a Camcorder, what is the difference between digital and Optical Zoom?
Is optical zoom better?
Optical zoom preserves the image quality by moving internal lenses to magnify the area of the image projected onto the image device, so that a wide angle (zoomed out shot) has the same picture resolution as a telephoto shot (zoomed in)
Digital zooms crop the image from the sensor and stretch it to fill the screen, this means less pixels are being used to fill the area and so detail is lost.
Optical zoom is better.
