digital camera zeiss lens
Does megapixels of a digital camera matter much to the image quality?
there are 2 cameras that I want. One has ordinary sony lenses, but has 10.1 MP, the other one has 7.2 MP, but has Carl Zeiss lenses.
Which one should I get???
Megapixels count is often used by marketers because its just an easy comparison to say I am better than you. It would have been harder to educate the masses that buy cameras about pixel size, pixel density, full well limits on pixels or sensor size ( and alot of the folks buying the cameras are in truth more interested in the color of the camera than these things but would buy a 10mp pink camera over an 8 mp pink camera) . Plus there’s no question that more megapixels can lead to digital photos with improved detail and image quality to a point so when all we had were lower MP counts it was more important. There was a great difference in a 1 mp camera and a 6 mp camera.Now we are reaching the breakover point where we are cramming so many megapixels into a small package that we are seeing dimishing returns and in some cases even declining quality. So we need to try to get the messege out that megapixels is only one measuremnet of what a sensor will do and not the whole picture. I liken it to your doctor taking just your blood pressure and nothing else and saying if you are in good health or not. Its an important measurement but its far from the whole picture.
So the difference between the 7.2 megapixel camera and the 10.1 needs to be evaluatted on more than megapixels. Look to see which one have the larger sensor. Look at pixel size and pixel density. Often cameras with lower pixel counts have fairly larger pixels in the sensor. This is a good thing it does not mean larger dots on your picture. Larger pixel means more light to each sensor which gives you better geometric accuracy, better tonal range better dynamic range and lower noise.
Look at all of the other features, maximum and min aperature, ISO range, Shutter speed range are all important factors. Got to DP review and plug them in to the side by side review then find which one has the features you want
