digital camera optical zoom comparison
Digital Camera Focal Length comparison?
Camera X says in the specs: Focal length 38mm to 114mm (35mm equivalent)
Camera Y says in the specs: Focal length 5.8 mm – 29 mm
What are the differences between the two and which is better or would you prefer?
N.b Both are 8 megapixel cameras
Camera X: Digital zoom 6 x & Optical zoom 3 x
Camera Y: Digital zoom 10 x & Optical zoom 5 x
Forget the digital zoom specs. You do not want to use digital zoom as it will give you an uglier image.
Native focal length is meaningless unless you also know the sensor size. Camera X is polite and gives a focal length range equivalent to a standard 35mm frame.
Who knows what Camera Y gives you. If they give a crop factor, you can figure out the 35mm equivalence by multiplying the crop factor times the native focal length.
By just guessing, camera Y will allow you to zoom in more optically. On the wide end (least amount of zoom), both cameras will probably be equivalent. Without knowing other specifications, brand, and your intended use, one can’t make a choice as to which is better.
