Canon Optura

Canon Optura 50 recordings with SD instead of mini DV tapes?

I am thinking about using my Sandisk Ultra II 2GB SD card to record on video with my Camcorder Canon Optura 50 – I would try to get video into the computer and backup to DVD – always saving me from the purchase of tapes, except maybe for longer sessions. Is it a good idea – the video / sound quality suffer? would be harder or easier to get the video on my computer? What should I know?
