Why has nobody made an affordable camcorder that can use Nikon or Canon mount lenses?
Everybody knows that Nikon and Canon make a great range of still-photo camera lenses, including some which are really good and quite affordable.
Most consumer and prosumer video cameras come with quite basic built-in lenses which optically are not that different to the sort of thing we might find in a low-end point & shoot still camera. My SLR has a range of all kinds of lenses including fish-eye, super-zoom and everything in-between, but most video cameras in the stores are stuck with the lenses that they were made with.
Why is it that no manufacturer as made the obvious combination: A camera intended primarily for video work (i.e. shaped like a camcorder, and not an SLR), but with support for either Nikon or Canon standard lenses?
Surely such a thing would be a commercial hit – there must be a pretty obvious reason why nobody has done this? Wouldn’t you want to be able to use the same lenses from your still-camera on your video camera?
You just described the Canon L1. It was a moderate hit, but used Hi8 tape. When redesigned as the XL1 for miniDV, the CCDs were made much smaller which meant that 35mm film lenses were all in the super telephoto range, not very useful for general video work. What a 35mm lens does not have is servo zoom and a focal lengh suitable for video (6 mm or less).
