camcorder memory card capacity
Can someone explain the differences between memory cards in a simple-to-understand way?
For a future Pentax digital camera purchase, it says a SD and SDHC card can be used. So, which one, and why?
And for a future digital camcorder with a 30GB hard drive, it says it has a Micro SD card slot. I am assuming you use that only if you take pics with the camcorder, right?
Then, there are Ultra II Compact Flash memory cards (are those for cell phones mainly?) Can they be used in the camera? How are they different?
I know some transfer data more quickly, but which?
I know some, like Transcend brand, have a lot of features, but do I need or want those features and why?
I don’t know why I am so confused over all these different cards.
Please tell me in a way so I can grasp, utilize and hold all this info in my memory!
And, lastly….what costs the most in any given card? The capacity or speed? And can you tell what they are if you buy these cards online?
For your Pentax:
SD or Secure Digital is a standard type of memory card that’s used on many devices and gets up to 2GB in size (roughly 600 pictures). The SDHC or Secure Digital High Capacity, is the same shape as the regular SD, but is faster which equals more pictures in less amount of time, and holds a minimum of 4GB worth of data (roughly 1,200 pictures).
For the camcorder:
As far as only taking pictures with the micro SD, that’s generally how it works, but depending on who makes the camcorder, you may be able to take video too. Keep in mind 30gb of storage on most camcorders = 40 hours of recording time.
Ultra II Compact Flash memory cards:
These are older types of flash cards, they’re rectangular in shape and are now mainly used by Digital SLR cameras, but they’re also being phased out.
Transfer Speeds:
The fastest speed is the SDHC so that’s the one I’d recommend for your Pentax. I’m not too familiar with any additional features, all I look for is capacity and speed because they fulfill the basic needs of the camera.
Cost of the cards:
It really depends on where you get them, but most of the cost is built into the capacity of the card. As far as I know, the SDHC only come in the one speed (but it’s been awhile since I’ve looked). If you decide to go with the SD, there are brands that make cards that are faster than they’re meant to be and you will end up paying extra for that feature.
If you were to buy your cards online you should be able to research and find out which cards are faster depending on quality of brand etc.
